Rug Care

Our rugs are made from organic, sustainable materials and natural dyes. We recommend the following steps to keep your rug in good condition for years to come.

  • Incorrect vacumming is very damaging to hand-made rugs, causing threads to pull out and sprouts to form. We recommend using the handheld attachment to vacuum your rug or sweep with a broom. If using a vacuum, please turn the beater bar off as this will pull fibers from the face of the rug and also cause the face of your rug to fuzz. If you cannot turn your beater bar off, please have it on the highest clearance setting.
  • The serging on the edges of rugs are very sensitive. Running the vacuum over the edges will cause the serging to deteriorate and fibers will come loose around the edges. Carefully place your vacuum on the edge of the rug, do not roll your vacuum onto your rug.
  • The fringes on the ends of wool rugs are easily damaged by all vacuums. Use the handheld attachment to clean fringes.
  • Natural fiber brooms and sweepers are a great, gentle way to clean your rug. Canister vacuums without beater bars are also effective.
  • If you spill on a rug, clean it immediately. Once the stain is set in it becomes more difficult to clean. Do not rub a spill or use excessive water as this forces the stain deeper into the rug.
  • With a dry cotton towel or white paper towel, blot out stain as much as possible. Gently scrape off any food or debris with a dull instrument.
  • Professional cleaning by a provider who specializes in handwoven rugs is recommended for deeper, older stains.
  • We recommend using a rug pad underneath every area rug. A rug pad extends the life of your rug as it absorbs wear and tear from the friction between floor and rug. They also help avoid accidents from slipping and tripping and provide extra cushion on hard surfaces for your feet.

Common Concerns

There are common characteristics inherent with hand woven rugs made from natural materials. The issues below are not considered defective and no reason for alarm.

  • Shedding: All wool rugs will have some shedding. Hand-knotted rugs will shed slightly less than tufted and woven rugs.
  • Sprouts: Loose fibers are common in hand-woven rugs. If you see loose fibers simply clip them carefully with scissors, do not pull by hand.
  • Creases: Creases can appear after a rug is shipped. Once unrolled, rug creases will disappear in a week or two. Try careful reverse rolling.
  • Colors: Different types of yarn will capture the dye colors differently. Hence, there might be some natural striation in the rug color and slight discrepancies from our site imagery.
  • Fading: Rugs in direct sunlight will fade over time. Rotate your rug and avoid placing near windows. We also recommend rotating rugs every 3-6 months due decrease wear.
  • Odor: Rugs recently removed from packing may have a natural fiber odor. This will dissipate in a week or so.
